Pachyderm

Pachyderm 2.0 is an easy-to-use multimedia authoring tool. Designed for people who have little or no multimedia authoring experience, Pachyderm is accessed through a web browser and is as easy to use as filling out a web form. The project is a partnership between the New Media Consortium (NMC), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), and the CDL, and is funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). CDL staff provide programming and development support to the project.

Pachyderm 2.0 went into beta at the end of February, 2005! The first round of testing started in the spring, with members of NMC institutions. Beta testing on the authoring system will continue through July 2005.

The beta opened with five fully functioning templates. The remaining eight templates will be added over the course of the summer. The beta will also benefit from professional usability testing provided by students at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Next steps for the project include adding and testing the remaining features and finalizing the download and installation package (to be tested in late summer 2005).

The Pachyderm 2.0 Project is a partnership led by NMC: The New Media Consortium and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), and is supported by a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

There is also an instance of the Pachyderm authoring tool exclusively for the CSU system, and is hosted by the CDL. Pachyderm is free open-source software, and can be installed at local campuses if desired.
